Lots of sketches...

My scanner lets me down on the quality, so I'm sorry if these images look a bit vague. They're a selection of doodles and development work for the viruses and the characters. These have been cleaned up and stuff and some of them have been added to my pitch (which is coming along nicely!) I don't have much left to do. Most of the work is tidying up things and making it all look presentable. I have to finish a few pages on my pitch but it's all coming together now.

Backgrounds

Here are some of my final(ish) backgrounds. They need some touching up but I think the textures kind of work. I'm going to redo the hospital one cause I think it's looking alot weaker then the others. I really like the lab one though!

I like the sort of cut-out paper-y feel of the one of the dump. They look like they're from different programs though. I will keep the clouds and the sky - it joins them all up.

Textures...

This is (near enough) my final insitu image. I do have another version where the viruses at the top are brought back a bit more and the other viruses are distributed more evenly. I'll add the more completed version to my pitch, which is starting to come together. Just need to add the text and stuff now.

I did a few colour keys, as I have started to colour my backgrounds. Basically the colour scheme I've gone for is white labs, b&w hospial, pink and turquoise sky (to represent that it's full of viruses...) and grey buildings. I'm keeping the dumpster brown and horrible. I've decided to use the ones I originally drew out because I think they suit the style more. I came across a bit of a problem when I came to colouring them though:

Here I've got the lines and then my first colouring attempt. As you can see, the dump just doesn't look cluttered and messy enough. It just looks like a bunch of mountains...although I like the sky. Anyway, I remembered one of my favourite cartoons from when I was little, Courage the Cowardly Dog. One of the things that make that cartoon so interesting (apart from it being really, really weird) was the textures they used in the backgrounds:

I want my cartoon to still look edgy and interesting. Although I love the simplistic backgrounds in most cartoons, I think the way these backgrounds look made the show more mature and as a kid, I think it made me want to watch it because it looked so different to other shows. So, I pulled some textures off the net just to see what it did to my background...

I think it certainly did...something. I like what it did to the dump alot! I was thinking of actually drawing all the stuff on the hills but I think this creates the illusion of there being lots of stuff there. Plus if you look at pictures of landfills and dumps, you can never make out what's there - it's just lots and lots of things.

I don't know if I should take it back or not, but I quite like it. I'm going to try it on my other 2 backgrounds and see what it does...

Updated...

I think I'm happier with this one. I've taken out all the fancy shading and what-not.

I'll get feedback on it tomorrow. Will be worth getting second opinions on it!

Some kind of image + Pitch progress

Okay, so the last few days I've been working on my final image for my pitch. Here are the lines and then where I am on the colouring:

The idea was to show the main characters running away from the swarm of viruses and have the evil group of viruses (who I have now named Noodle, Vince and Nubs) laughing at their peril. I'm not happy with the background on this image yet so I'm gonna get it right before I add it to the pitch.

Here's a screen shot of the pitch so far. I was going to make it bright and colourful but it looked so tacky. Plus although this is a kids show and I want to reflect that as much as possible, I'm going to be pitching this at adults, so I want to make it look kind of dynamic and edgy and full of quirky little bits, like the show :). I need to work on the colours and it's still in it's early stages, but it should look really nice when it's done. I think my main goal is to make it user friendly.

Here's the enter page, by the way:

The little virus on the left bounces!
